Download: Gucci Mane's UK Collab mixtape - more GRRRR than BURRR

Logan Sama recently debuted the first track on his Kiss 100 grime show from  collaborative project between Sinden and the grime scene; using vocals from Gucci’s last album, The Appeal.

I've been a close follower of southern hip hop (especially Atlanta, Memphis, New Orleans) for 10 years but just can't get on with Gucci Mane. OK, he has a few hot tunes (Lemonade, tip of my tongue) but considering water cannon like  volume of output his 'ish is just too igna'nt!

However the breadth of names alone on this make it a must listen, here's the tracklist!

Gucci Mane Feat. Dream Mclean & Wiley - Remember When (Terror Danjah Remix) [Radio Rip]

This one featuring Dream Mclean and Wiley was cool (ignoring Gucci's verse) ...until RAY J, the out of favour crooner lay his stomach wrenching chorus.

I've always hoped for some mindblowing Grime and Durrty south collabs (think Lil Jon and Lethal B, or TI and Wiley) but this has missed the mark in my humble opinion...
Based on this lead track, the general consensus here is more GRRRR than BURRR. Artwork's great tho!

Video: Kano x Ghetts – “Lady Killer” Live At Red Bull Studios London

Worth a watch... Not the best of tunes they've made but interesting to see the dynamics of the live band alongside grime which is a side of grime that's not been executed to it's fullest potential as yet (The BBC Electric proms did their thing tho!).

Video: Trilla - Flush Raw Freestyle (Part 2)

Interesting video here from Trilla, who's certainly amongst the best of the Birmingham grime scene. The bars's are bit darker than his average tune anthere's too much tooing and fro-ing in front of the camera i reckon. It also means he's not as clear with his bars (out of breath a bit!) but it's big regardless, Trilla's an MC you can't ignore...

Download: Sidewinder presents Country Music

Seriously sick Birmingham grime and hip hop mixtape here featuring the likes of Lady Leshurr, Vader, Ill murk and Flex the Truth. Give this a listen and you'll see there's plenty of talent out side of London!

Download: Cyclonious - Escape To Reality (Mixtape)

Seriously dope mixtape here from East London rapper Cyclonious. I've become increasingly selective when posting up mixtapes but was particularly impressed with this one! Features from Big Cakes, TB and more combined with dope beats throughout and hard rhymes make this a must have for any fan of real hip hop. The mixtape carries an apocalyptic theme, reminiscent of intro track on Busta Rhymes' 'Anarchy' album. Click cover to download!

Video: Maverick Sabre - Look What I've Done

Big new video from one of the UK's brightest 'new' artists. I say 'new' as he's been working his way up for five years but definitely has a unique sound that the people can relate to in the same way as Devlin or Mike Skinner/The Streets. With the emergence of artists like Ed Sheeran and Plan B (as a singer/rapper) also, this could be the start of a new trend!

Video: Ace Hood Talks “Hustle Hard Remix” with Lil Wayne and T Pain

Miami rapper Ace Hood speaks to Derick G about one of my favourite tunes at the moment, his 'Hustle Hard Remix' with Lil Wayne and Rick Ross, while on the set of DJ Khaled’s 'Welcome To My Hood' video shoot. Good to see Wayne and Pain in their ''off camera'' mode!

New video from Phaze One spitting bars at the video shoot for his track 'Check Yourself'.

Audio: Stig of the Dump - All of that ('Slang like this' dub)

Newcastle's best rapper since PJ & Duncan (that's Ant & Dec to my younger readers) Stig of the Dump drops his take on the P money/True tiger banger 'Slang like this'...

**trivia** after Stig destroyed Asher D at a Jump Off battle event in 2006, Robbie Williams reached out to work with him and show his appreciation.

Audio: Smiler - Wait And See

UK boom bap freeness here from S Ldn's Smiler (who had a recent hit with 'Enza'). The track is an accurate reflection of what London hip hop is about in 2011, but 'Wait and see' as this is just taste of what's to come. He's working on his next single (Due in March) and debut album which is due this Summer.

Rick Ross- Even Deeper prod by Cashous Clay

The way that rick ross duppies this sample, it's almost like Barry White has been brought back from the dead in the form of a rapper. Smashed it.

Download: Professor Green – “Jungle” (Remix) ft Klashnekoff, Wretch 32 & Malik

This is what you call a remix! 4 of some of the greatest UK hip hop artists jump on the remix to one of 2010's best singles. Klashnekoff's verse makes the track sound like it was made for him!

Video: T4 try to interview Devlin

Who would have predicted that Devlin would be in a Sugababes/McFly type interview so soon after hitting the big time. Worth a watch, just to see how enormously different it is to the one below from GSI TV which is definitely better!

A grime interview with Devlin from October 2009!

Audio: JoshXantus - I Don't Care ft. Nipsey Hussle (West Coast Remix)

One of the biggest new rappers out the West coast, Nipsey Hussle adds a Cali touch to Josh Xantus' single "I Don't Care" alongside Ghostface... soulful production from Statik Selektah.

Video: Mz.Bratt 'Get Dark' (Live Performance ft Mikey J & DJ Kayper)

Mz Bratt performs her follow up to 'Selecta' and samples herself from that tune on this one! 'Get Dark' is performed live alongside Kano's producer Mikey J on the MPC and DJ Kayper on the scratch. Seems like she's bringing back that boom bap style of NY hip hop for the UK!

Video: Ramar - a couple of promo vids..

Two recent mini videos here released by an MC who could be working his way up in the scene very soon; 17 year old Ramar from Greenwich, SE London.
The track below features Hannah Dineen who reminds me of a younger Ny on the hook, and strong production from Sam James. To me it's reminiscent of the theme song from one of my favourite movies, Requiem for a dream, sampled brilliantly by Lil Jon.

Get Ramar's promo mixtape 'life in the booth' here.

Video: Leicester Allstars - Straight From LC

This is banging! Loving the production and you can definitely hear the MCs' hunger. One of the artists in the track, LJ was on Westwood's 1xtra show today and described it as Leicester's Pow 2011! These are the artists: LJ, G-tek, Tweetz, Shotta, Rezz G, SG, Turbz, Roots, Wanda, Mnt, Kaution And Luke Bingham.

Video: Mystro - 2010 UK Rap Up

For the second year running Mys Diggi and Black Einstein
on productions drop the video for the summary of everything that mattered in 2010!
Filmed/Directed/Edited by A Wasteman Production.

Video: SB.TV x Trapstar Cypher

SB.TV joins forces with London based clothing label Trapstar & DJ Motive to bring you a hot cypher from Skits, Nate, Ash Catch'em & Shadez the Misfit...
Who do you reckon merked this? My money's on Ash Catch'em, but I've not heard any of them previously so I won't judge them too soon!

Audio: B Face - Dont Care

Big track here from an emerging grime artist who I can see doing big things in 2011!

Here's a recent video from him also, directed by the living legend that is Digital Dan.

Audio: MIK & Merky Ace - Shut down (prod. by Spooky DJ)

Despite the torrent of high quality grime MIK has unleashed ever since I've promoted his music from early 2009, this is the high intensity grime I've been anticipating! Spooky, on production duties somehow takes the energy level a step beyond his disgusting Spartan beat while MI and Merky take a bulldozer to the mic and leave it shattered into pieces.

This brings me back to the first time I heard Lil Jon back in 2001 with his screw face inducing crunk classic, 'Bia Bia'.

MIK & Merky Ace (DJ SPOOKY) - Shut Down by hyperfrank

You can support BlatantlyBlunt by purchasing (some or all of) MIK's debut mixtape Workaholic from iTunes, Amazon etc. www.workaholic.tk.

Video: JME - Mike Lowery Freestyle

JME films and edits his own video of his take on his bro's new track. The theme of this one seems to focus on his consistency and ignorance of the B.S. that surrounds him. Some more "outside the box" thinking, as he's got himself on the screen in the background which doesn't make full sense but I'll leave him to it!
Lyrically JME feels he has something to prove claiming he doesn't care about karma but also drops some wisdom. Once again JME puts out grime with substance!!

News: UK Producer Alex Da Kid Talks Eminem, Grammy Nods and more

Alex Da Kid has come a long way from his London beginnings. The former soccer player produced two of last year’s biggest hits, the Hayley Williams assisted B.o.B. single “Airplanes” and Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie” which featured Rihanna. The young producer has certainly found his lane with the rap/pop crossovers and he was rewarded for this with several Grammy nominations including Song of the Year and Record of the Year, bother for “Love the Way You Lie.”

The British hit-maker recently sat down with Gerrick D. Kennedy of the Los Angeles Times to discuss his big year. About the Eminem collaboration Alex says it was his success with B.o.B. that lead to that pairing: “He was looking for a new sound and wanted to work with new producers on his album…We were trying to figure out what would make sense and not go too far out of his comfort zone, but he wanted something different. So I sent him ‘Love the Way You Lie.’ It happened really late on the album. He recorded it in two days, and I went to mix it with him in Detroit, and that’s when I first met him. Soon as he heard the song he said he wanted Rihanna.”

The producer plans to do it up just as big 2011 with production work for Dr. Dre, Diddy, T.I., and Rihanna all scheduled to be released. To read the full interview head over to The Los Angeles Times’ blog.

Video: 8Ball - Stars

Something slightly unexpected here from 8Ball (of 8ball & MJG), a veteran rapper from Memphis. Flow reminds me of Who we be by DMX and the lyrical content is on point. Combine this with his vocal persona and the metal band (duno who they are) and this makes for a big track!

News: Shady record signs Slaughterhouse and Yelawolf

One of the most exciting developments in the US hip hop scene for years was announced on Tuesday as Eminem's label Shady Records strengthened their roster with the signing of the super group (consisting of Royce da 5'9, Crooked I, Joelle Ortiz and Joe Budden) and Alabama rapper Yelawolf, who I've been rating as one of the most exciting acts in the scene.

"Yelawolf and Slaughterhouse, it's kinda phase two of Shady," says Eminem. "It's the new generation of Shady Records and as we're trying to rebuild our label, it's exciting for hip-hop and with all of these forces coming together and with what everybody's capable of on the mic, it's gonna be fun."

There had been rumours of Slaughterhouse joining Shady (especially after they appeared with Em in the Drake 'Forever' video), and have collabed in the past on this track 'Session One':

Yelawolf shared his thoughts as well:

"Considering where I'm from and the shit I've been through, it's hard to put into words what partnering with Shady means to me, my team at Ghet-O-Vision, and my state of Alabama. I can tell you that when you're willing to give your life up to see a dream through, the reward is great. And now that I've become an apprentice to one of the greatest artists in the world, my potential reaches beyond anything I ever imagined. Let's kill this shit."

I can see big things for the future of the label, and it seems Em's resorted to proven names this time, as 50 cent has been the only REAL success under the label with previous signings Cashis, Stat Quo, Obie Trice, D12 and Bobby Creekwater not creating the impact that had been hoped.

Video: SB Warm Up Sessions - Elro

Watch this twice. It's worth it. Words can't really describe how quirky nutty funny this guy is. Just don't dismiss it as an Eminem rip off, even if he does bite his flow a few times!

Video: R.I.O FEAT SHIFTY & GHETTS - WE LOVE GRIME

I know I'm late with posting this video (one month is a long time in the blogosphere!) but I had heard the track back in November on Z Dot's Route To Success Part 2 and as good as it was the video brings it to life even more. Another sterling job from the production team at Grime Daily! Shifty (the white guy) is probably my top rated Manchester MC. Expect big things out of him this year!

12 January 2011

Video: BLAZE & MR A - GHOST TOWN

Banging dubstep orientated grime track here, sampling the 1980s UK classic Ghost Town by The Specials. Produced by Blaze also. I'm feeling the video also, mad ghostly effects on the MCs! Directed by Chas Appeti.

Video: Top 5 rappers treading on thin ice!

We all know the music game is fickle, especially the overly crowded hip hop scene. US Hip hop site RealTalkNY breaks down who they think are on the brink of obscurity... I definitely agree with at least 3 of them!

Video: SB.TV - J.Cole Interview

Georgia LA meets the man of the moment J. Cole to talk about the development of his much-awaited new album, his views on the current state of hip hop and more! I saw him perform as warm up for the Drake show last Friday and he was incredible! Check my footage coming soon.

Ed Sheeran hits #2 on the iTunes chart

With no videos from the EP, no label backing and only a few spins on radio, Ed Sheeran (with the help of the best of the grime scene) has a place next to Rihanna on the iTunes album charts at number two.

If you're unaware of who Ed Sheeran even is , check this short profile I knocked up for Urban Development last November..
http://www.urbandevelopment.co.uk/updown/features-reviews/features/profiles/profile-ed-sheeran-new-kid-block_1470

Features on the EP include: Devlin, Wiley, P Money, JME, Mikill Pane, Ghetts, Random Impulse, Sway, Wretch 32 and Dot Rotten.

If the names are unfamiliar to you, in grime terms it's close on to four of the biggest Russian oligarchs gathering their savings together and chipping in for their kids' college graduation party.

According to the BBC, Ed's original idea for the release was rejected by record labels, who suggested he gave the music away for free to raise his profile. He is charging £5 for the CD on his website and it costs £6.32 from iTunes.

Audio: Papoose f. Karina Bradley - 2010 Obituary

Remember Papoose? That NY MC that had the biggest buzz since 50 cent? He got taken under the wing of DJ Kay Slay and Busta Rhymes, got a major label deal and subsequently flopped harder than John Cena. His wife Remi Ma then went to jail and he's been in hip hop limbo ever since...
Here's his 2010 obituary over Nas and 2pac's 'Thug Mansion'. Listen!

Video: Urban Fire Xtra - Roc Da Mic: Mikill Pane

New one here from Mikill Pane, one of the artists I'm tipping for big things this year. Definitely an out of the ordinary MC!

8 January 2011

Video: Clipson - Another Level ft A.L.

Really rating this track. Production from Rowntree and video by Digital Dan who's probably the most exciting UK video director , and this one is continues that trend. Particularly impressed with AL's contribution on this track!

A very Mike Skinner style press release

Looks like they're going out with a bang, leaving the scene in the same unorthodox manner in which they (or is it 'he'?) entered. Most people didn't listen to the previous album. It was big. Forget that tho, check below for their new video.

The final Streets album

It's gonna be called 'Computers And Blues' and it's all about dancing and CHATTING SHIT.

45 minutes of 130 bpm style straight spittin.

one more banger

dancing music to drink tea to

The final Streets album (the fifth one) will be dark and futuristic.
This could not be further from the album you're about to hear, but it's what is on my mind at the moment.
I feel inspired by the synthesizer exhibition we just visited in Graz [Austria] after the gig we just did.

My new album is FAST and DARK. singing it loud and playing it with my manager in the dressing room WOOOOO

this album is influenced by the future. It hasn't happened yet

im just excited at how MASSIVE its sounding. ive been up since 4am
It now sounds ravey. It is a ravey album album that bludgeons you over the head with its stick of 1988 Romford, Blackpool and Philadelphia rock. It is an insane album.

New video which is taken from Verb T's new album 'Serious Games', produced by UK hip hop's hottest producer Jon Phonics. The album is available from: www.ynr-productions.co.uk.

Video: KINGS OF THE CITY - Young Boy

Banging new video from Ali Bla Bla, Koken and the band members that are collectively known as Kings of the City. This track will be on the BlatantlyBlunt third anniversary mixtape #threeyearshighandrising so you know it's got my seal of approval! Look out for their epic video with Klashnekoff dropping soon!

Here's the trailer for that...

Video: Random Impulse - Overload

Mr Random Impulse drops the video for his new single which is already the 10th most viewed video in the UK and the 90th in the WORLD!

I chatted to him back in October, here's what he had to say about his re-fix series and the single above! Give it a look...

Video: Skillz talks the story of his annual Rap Up track

Real interesting and shows he's a humble dude.

Video: Fem Fel - Put it in a bag ft. Blade Brown

Big track here which features cameos from some of the UK's biggest names. With this track following his massive video Running (click here for my review) which dropped a few weeks ago, 2011 could see Fem Fel make a dent on the scene!

Video: Merky Ace - Yo

This is one of the reasons I love grime music! Merky Ace jumps on this ridiculously nutty beat from one of grime's underground MVPs Spooky DJ. Loving the bars, flows, beat and picture based video here (made by a guy called WWWud). Look out for Merky he's doing a lot!

Audio: Ya Boy - Facelift

Konvict Muzik and Bay Area artist Ya Boy drops some fire over this grimey beat. Some big bars here! Not heard much of this artist but his name's been floating about for the last few years...

Video: Dappys Alternative Christmas Message

I'm posting this as it has some good messages to be considered and it proves Dappy's better at reading off auto-cue than most erm auto-cue readers.
If indeed Costadinos Contostavlos wrote any of this (which I think he did to a certain extent) then big up to him. I'm of the belief (at the risk of losing readers) that as much as you probably hate N Dubz they do have a talent at making hits (numbers don't lie) so you can't hate on them as much as you'd like to.

Video: Rosca - Jackpot

Rinse FM DJ and producer Roska drops a video following on from the his previous ones, with fun animation and a quirky edge to it. The vocal sample used is the same one used by DJ Zinc for his classic 'Go DJ' track tho which is a bit cheeky! Still, I remain a fan of what Roska does!

Video: Elijah 2010 Reviews: Logan Sama

Elijah of Grime DJ/Label pair 'Butterz' chats to DJ Logan Sama and summarizes grime in 2010. Well worth the watch!

Video: Sizzla Kalonji Live in London

Undoubtedly my favourite reggae artists of the moment (if not ever) played a show in London recently (which I didn't hear about until AFTER the gig!). Word on Road TV got some great footage of the gig and chatted to the man himself backstage...

News: Souljah Boy reveals he wrote 'Whip my hair' for Willow Smith

Can't say I'm especially surprised about this but whoever hired him to do so definitely had their money making hat on at the time! Mr Boy, who's probably got the most polarized opinions (I'm personally a fan) since 50 cent revealed this on Twitter today...

He's also claiming that he tried to sign Cher Lloyd from the X Factor. I'm actually surprised the yanks are so interested in signing her (again, I'm a fan!) but it's gotta be a good thing!

Download: Footsie - Rastaman Pickney EP

click cover to download

I know I'm a few days late with this but Footsie drops his free EP (mainly instrumentals).
I think sometimes Footsie gets overshadowed by D Double but in my view he's a sick artist in his own right, and is a badman on the buttons!

Video/Download: Mikill Pane - 'Fairytale' & Shatter EP

New video here from Mikill Pane, an artist that I'm tipping for big things this year both as a rapper and as a constant source of amusement on Twitter.

This new video is the story of the recent student protests in Central London. Deep bars and a good video, capturing footage of that fateful day!

He's recently put out a free EP for you lot , check it here! Also check my interview with him for MTV Wrap Up here.

Audio: Ms Darks - Alright Ft. Courtney LDN

New track from an artist I've been supporting for a long while, Ms Darks drops this new one with production from label team mate Jordan James. On this one she covers some political/conspiracy issues which is always good to hear! Also check the video interview I did with her a little while back!

Audio/Download: Malik MD7 - A Dream Within A Dream

Quite possibly the best UK rapper outside of London, Birmingham hip hop veteran Malik (from the crew Moorish Delta 7) drops this new one which is on one of those profound flexes, loosely based on the movie Inception by the sounds of it! Give it a listen and download here.

Audio: Skillz - Rap Up 2010

Skillz drops his ninth consecutive Rap Up with this one. Smashes it as I expected! Definitely worth a listen. You can download here.

Download: Big Cakes - KFC

New mixtape from Big Cakes, one of my current favourites in the UK Hip hop scene. He's been doing his thing for the last few years and on this mixtape mainly spits over some hot US beats.
Download this if you're into real lyrics and good vibes! Look out for his forthcoming project 'Blue Cheese'!

Download Big Cakes - KFC

Video: Byron - Beautiful

Byron drops his interpretation of the classic Masta Ace track on this exquisite new video. The slough originating lyricist has dropped a few videos in the past but this one's had the full storyboarding treatment courtesy of KissingGate Productions, and really compliments the skills he possesses. You can download the track on his mixtape "Jack Of None", available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon and more...

Audio: Badness - Exaggerate ft. Wariko

Sick new one here from Badness who brings in Wariko to feature. Loads of energy and lyrical bars here over some crazy production by Beat Geeks. Feeling this one a lot!

Badness spat the bars from this track during my freestyle video with him recently. Check the interview also!

Audio: Mystro - UK 2010 Rap Up (RadioRip)

When it comes to 'rapping up' the year in hip hop and beyond, the US has Skillz, who's been putting them out since 2002! Over here in the UK we have Mystro, who's been doing his thing for the last 10 years. Here's the radio rip of his second 'Rap up' from Vis' show on 1xtra on Friday. Production from Black Einstein. Big! Look out for the video dropping very soon..

Here's an interview I did with Mys Diggi a few months back, he drops some bars at the end also, take a look!
