Audio: Zdot - GANGSTER Feat. Scrufizzer, R.I.O, Warlock, Shifty, Revolver, Wariko

Quite possibly the most filthy tune right now in grime. Not many producers can boast such a line up on the first single off their new album, and based on the beat you can understand how Z Dot's able to pull it off! His new release, 'A new light' is out NOW! Buy it from iTunes. Check my interview with Z Dot and Dan Dare for MTV here.

Z Dot was this weeks guest on Logan Sama's Kiss 100 show. He came down with Warlock and Revolver to spray bars and talk about the new release. Check that freestyle here and listen to the interview here.

Another sick track from Smiler who's one of the relative newcomers to the UKHH scene but is making progess at a fast rate! Nice production once again, with tight flows, strong delivery and bars to match. I like the interpolation from Shirley Bassey's classic, 'Big Spender'.

Here's a video off the mixtape with Lil B... haunting production and laid back rhymes...

Interview: Beatgeeks chat to DJ Lubertz

Nottingham production duo Beat Geeks have been steadily building their name recently, working extensively with Wariko and featuring on a Dot Rotten track in collaboration with The Camden Roundhouse and grime blogger Hyperfrank. Our contributor DJ Lubertz caught up with them to see what’s popping...

Who you are and how did you come up with your music name?

Bless G! We’re a production team Nottingham called BeatGeeks and we specialise in grime, even though we are versatile. We came up with the name BeatGeeks because when it comes to making music we actually turn into full on geeks, and were producing beats so we thought “yeah Beat Geeks”.

I caught up with you guys at the Urban Development’s ‘Producer and DJ special’ Industry Takeover seminar in January. What were your thoughts on music production seminars and do you believe there is enough coverage for music producers?

Yeah shouts outs to Urban Development; we think that Industry Takeover is definitely a good look - these seminars give emerging producers, artists, managers etc. the chance to gain inside information about the industry, and it gives you the chance to network with relevant people. This is definitely important for us living all the way in Nottz! With man like Logan Sama being on the panel it was great because he is a DJ who we look up to and respect so we definitely appreciated getting advice from him. Hearing from man like Bless Beatz who has gone through certain channels, it gives us an insight in what to expect in the future.

This year we’ve seen the new project that Hyperfrank and Camden Roundhouse are putting out called Volume Control. How did you guys become the first to get involved?

Yea, definitely gotta send a big shout to Hyperfrank and The Roundhouse. She hollered us and told us about the project she was doing, and that she wanted some producers involved who’s names ain’t out there as much yet. We thought this was a good opportunity and we submitted our instrumental which was called ‘Nightmare’.

Also, a big big shout out to everyone who voted for us, we managed to win the competition and that’s how the Dot Rotten track ‘Thunder’ came about. Remember you can check that out on Youtube, or check www.hyperfrank.co.uk to keep up with what’s going off at Volume Control.

BeatGeeks have a different grime sound, so what are your processes when it comes to making a beat?

When we are in the studio it’s more of a spontaneous thing, we will just go with the vibe and let the music carry us. Also we both come from different musical backgrounds. One of us comes from the bashment/jungle/garage to grime route where the other comes from Soul/R’n’B/Hip Hop to Grime.

What's in the pipeline for this year?

We’ve just dropped a mixtape with Wariko and Z Dot called Puddin ‘N’ Treacle which was hosted by Cameraman Sketch. You can download that from www.beatgeeks.co.uk for free. Look out for Wariko’s album Natural Born Poet which will be out in late April - we produced all of that. We also have a instrumental E.P which is also coming out very soon, and another E.P with Wariko which we produced alongside Skitz Beatz. We’re gonna be shooting a few videos to some tracks off the mixtape and album.

What is your studio set up?

The studio at this present moment is based at Sycamore Centre in Stanns in Nottingham. BeatGeeks are religiously Mac users and the program we favor using is Logic Pro 9. We sometimes use the MPC as a sequencer instead of Logic but not often. We both have setups at our yards as well, with one of us having the Triton and the other having a Fantom, mixing the two sounds together.

Top 5 plugins?

  • Triton
  • Roland Fantom
  • M1
  • Waves
  • FM8

Top 5 producers you believe are breaking through at the moment?

  • BeatGeeks
  • Teeza
  • Royal-T
  • SNK
  • Nu Klear

Video: SNEAKBO - ROLL UP

The latest star to appear on the UK road rap scene is Sneak Bo from Brixton. Not too sure about the Nelly style chorus from US rapper Wiz Khalifa but the tune's hard and serves it's purpose well. He reminds me of an Ice Cube type of artist with an intense delivery, tight flow and a story to tell...

He's also featured on a remix with Chipmunk of this recent banger by Movado. I rate this!

BlatantlyBlunt TV: Scrufizzer quick chat and triple time bars!

Recently met up with grime's motor mouth Scrufizzer at Urban Development's all day event at The Rich Mix in East London. News: Dot Rotten rushed by ex-crew OGs in Nandos restaurant.

Ex OGs member Dot Rotten was rushed today in the Greenwich branch of Nando's by members of his former crew OGs, as both sides announced on Twitter some of the day's events...

While OGs member Ruger tweeted the following:
...and a little later used the Twit Longer feature to say this:

Dot Rotten has a sour history with OGs after he broke up from the group a little while back, with diss tracks being fired either way. OGs member Jendor recently directed a track against Rotten, criticizing his absence after the death of OGs founding member N.E.

This may not turn out to be so Rotten for Dot, whose tailor made A Sauvage suit in his first major video 'Normal human being', doesn't fit the average grime artists' attire. The track, produced by certified UK producer Naughty Boy dropped a couple of weeks ago, amassing close to 50000 views already, thanks perhaps to his mainstream coverage including a feature in GQ's online music section

In the knowledge that 'no publicity is bad publicity', this may serve in his favour, especially when his stage name, like many others in grime have negative connotations (e.g. Tinie Tempah, Griminal) which artists seem to be trying to shake off before it gets too late (Black the Ripper switching to Samson and Don Strapzy to Dru Blu for example)!

BlatantlyBlunt TV: Mic Righteous interview and freestyle

We caught up with him recently at Urban Development's All Dayer at Rich Mix, East London, last Saturday. He was performing as part of Charlie Sloth's 'Fire out the booth' showcase alongside the likes of Dru Blu aka Don Strapzy, Black the Ripper and English Frank. Was a BIG show!

Interview: Spooky DJ

Our newest contributor DJ Lubertz interviews one of the underground grime scene’s top producer DJs...

DJ Lubertz: You’re a DJ/producer and also have played at countless dances, radio stations, provided guest mixes and now your name has started getting a bigger buzz within the scene. How did you get involved with music production and DJing?

Spooky: I got involved from a young age, something like thirteen, but even before then I wanted to be a DJ so practising via one turntable, one tape deck and one CD was nuts. Then a DJ friend of mine brought me onto Mystic FM and the rest was history. As for the production side of things, I started off using Fruity Loops re-fixing the biggest grime tunes at the time i.e. Eskimo, Hoe, Pulse X, DPM etc. Then I used to watch others using Reason so tried my hand at that and stuck with it ever since.

DJ L: What’s your studio set up and how do you go about to making tracks?
S: I am a ‘Reason’ head. I have used ‘Logic’ before but now I got to get to grips with Rewire to give them the ultimate POWER! As for my studio set up, it's just me and a Mac. It would mainly start with a melody then build around it with subs, synths, basslines, strings, drum kits and so forth.

DJ L: How do you come to terms with dealing with bookings, and what are your thoughts on the current promoters and grime nights?

S: WE NEED MORE GRIME RAVES!!!!! The gap between each grime rave is too long and the fact that the funky house scene dominates the majority of the West End, most of East London comes like the West End for grime in a sense. Plus the fact that there's about ten to fifteen funky raves - week in week out. But one to two grime raves a month is not right when there's an audience in grime consisting of fans, DJs, MCs, bloggers, journalists, camera operators, photographers and producers who all want to experience the live element of grime. I am sure there are even a majority of funky house ravers and promoters who are getting fed up with the same old line up of DJs and MCs at the same raves week in week out.

DJ L: Which five producers would you like to work with?

S: Five producers I would like to collaborate with would have to be Swindle, Terror Danjah, Spyro, Darq E Freaker & Exo Remedy.

DJ L: With regards to Logan Sama's (Kiss 100) show being cut down to one hour a week, do you think there should be more platforms for grime on commercial radio?

S: I feel there should be more specialist grime DJs on mainstream radio like Kiss, 1Xtra, Choice, Capital FM, BBC London etc because Logan's show being cut to an hour ain't right. Nothing against Logan but you will not hear the best of grime in just one hour when there are producers and MCs who make more than an hour's worth of music a week. Plus I think its time most of the dead weight on most of these stations need to be dropped to make room for guys like me who will supply the best in grime.

DJ L: Has the grime scene become better or worse since 2006?, and what is your opinion about people going commercial and not supporting the scene they came from? (no indirect, *cough* cough*)

S: Many people tried to say grime died years ago, so why the fuck is it still going on? Even since 2006, its because nobody wanted to bring nothing new to the table or do anything different. That's why they tried to say it was dead. But as long as I'm about giving the people tunes like ''Spartan'' then the future's bright. As for all the commercial goon bags, let them stay over there. Just know the underground won’t keep your spot nice and warm for you, because we’ve got a bag of hungry guys out here taking your spots anyway.
Hahahahahahahahahaha.

Event: Yelawolf Joins U.K. Leg Of Wu-Tang's Tour

The Wu-Tang Clan has added five U.K. dates to their current tour. The tour will begin with two shows at London’s HMV Forum in June and conclude with a headlining show at Manchester Academy in June. After a sabbatical from the domestic leg of the tour, which saw Raekwon release his Shaolin Vs. Wutang, Yelawolf and Young Dirty Bastard will join the Staten Island collective.

Yelawolf Joins U.K. Leg Of Wu-Tang's Tour

June 11, 12 – London HMV Forum
June 13 – Birmingham HMV Institute
June 14 – Edinburgh HMV Picture House
June 15 – Manchester Academy

Theboombox.com reports that the Clan's Abbot will miss the tour due to prior business engagements. "Well, I gotta be honest about the tour. I have too much business going this quarter, so I won't be on the tour," said RZA. "I'm going to try to join those guys during the springtime, though. Wu-Tang is coming to a lot of towns across the country and you know they'll leave their mark. I won't be there, unfortunately."

In the meantime, RZA's business ventures include two movies: martial arts film titled Wu-Tang Vs. The Golden Phoenix, as well as another film, Iron Fist.

The FBI’s Files on Biggie’s Murder

The FBI has made available to the public hundreds of pages of investigative notes and documents related to the murder of Biggie on March 9, 1997. The docs include incredibly detailed notes on the events that led up to the murder, the shooting itself and the investigation that followed. One bit of information that was previously unknown to the public is the fact that Big was killed with a German Gecko 9mm pistol, a weapon not commonly seen on the streets of the U.S., and some considerably rare ammunition. It will probably take weeks to dig through all of this stuff, but the Smoking Gun points out another interesting tidbit, the personal items Big was carrying at the time of his murder: a bag of weed, an asthma inhaler and 3 Magnum condoms.

View the FBI documents here.
